Strong Communities: Supporting the Voluntary and Community Sector

$image_alternative.data

We support voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations and statutory bodies which use community development approaches.

Our work in this area focuses on enabling the VCS and statutory bodies to share information and expertise, and to develop new partnerships. In particular, we support joint working on sustainable development and climate change.

Past projects have included:

  • Involvement in Shared Energy, a project funded by the Barings Foundation and delivered in partnership with bassac, Groundwork UK, New Economics Foundation and the Community Sector Coalition. The project engaged with local community anchor organisations to look at how such organisations can best address climate change.
  • Publication of Green up! Five ways to work with your council on the environment and sustainability, a guide for community and voluntary groups.

Currently we are:

  • Managing the delivery of a new website for the Association for Research in the Voluntary and Community Sector (ARVAC), which will provide a communication hub for those undertaking research into the VCS (delivery by ARVAC).
  • Managing the delivery of video diaries, stories and interviews on the subject of trusteeship to be used as peer learning tools (delivery by ARVAC).
  • Developing the evidence base on support needs for community action on sustainable development. We have undertaken a review of research on the support needs for community action on sustainable development, and a workshop to identify research gaps and implications for policy will be held in June 2010.
  • Carrying forward development of the Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change, and developing the JustAct website.
