The environment

CDF recognises that its activities have an impact on the local, regional and global environment, and as a consequence of this we are committed to continuous improvement in the environmental sustainability of our activities and practices. We also seek to ensure that our suppliers to follow similar practice.

CDF are accredited to Phase 3 of the Acorn Environmental Management System (BS8555)

We encourage the groups and organisations we work with to take a sustainable approach, and this has been especially reflected in CDF’s role in the following initiatives:

Every Action Counts
From April 2006 until May 2009 CDF was the coordinating partner for Every Action Counts. The programme was developed in order to embed sustainable development into the existing work of local community groups. It was funded by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and delivered by a consortium of 29 organisations.

JustAct / Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change
CDF worked with partners on the Every Action Counts programme to develop the Third Sector Climate Change. In 2009 we developed the JustAct website to help signatories of the Declaration to take action and share their experiences. Sign up to the Declaration here.

Oxfam / New Economics Roundtable on Climate Change and Poverty
CDF was a partner in the roundtable which looked at how public policy could address the issues of both climate change and poverty. You can read the report [here].

Baring Climate Change Initiative
In 2009-10 CDF led one of four projects funded by the Baring Foundation to support non environmental organisations to address the issue of climate change. The project resulted in the production of the ‘Shared Energy’ Toolkit which outlines a number of activities that community organisations can undertake with staff, trustees and beneficiaries in order to stimulate action on climate change. You can find the Toolkit [here].

Local Action on Sustainable Development
CDF has worked with local community groups, national voluntary sector and organisations and others in order to produce:

• ‘Green Up!’ (2010), a practical guide for local groups on working with your local authority on environmental issues
• [‘Supporting Community Action on Sustainable Development and Climate Change’] (2011), a position paper reviewing existing policy and practice relating to community action on environmental issues.

CDF is currently an advisory on the following boards and projects:

• Defra Civil Society Advisory Board
Community Innovation for Sustainable Energy (Universities of Sussex & East Anglia)
Vulnerable People and Climate Change (NCVO)
