Involvement

In April 2009, public authorities were placed under a duty to inform, consult and involve local people.  To support authorities in meeting this Duty to Involve, CDF’s Engaged Communities Team published an authoritative guide (see Duty to Involve: Making it Work).  The guide sets out a robust approach to meeting the Duty, specifying 8 factors for success, and highlighting considerations for audit/assessment and benchmarking opportunities.

Our Engaged Communities Team is now developing a programme of work to support authorities to embed some of these practices.  Working closely with teams of practitioners in a small number of authorities, we are identifying key involvement challenges, and developing excellent practices for better involvement.   The projects will tackle practical, operational issues and will be action orientated.  Our partners SOLACE Enterprises will undertake initial reviews with authorities to identify areas for action. Then our Engaged Communities Team will conduct on-site group work, over the course of a 6 month period.

The learning we capture from this intensive work will be disseminated and shared more widely.  We intend to report our findings and recommendations in June 2010.

If you would like to know more about the project, or how to access the learning, contact tom.archer@cdf.org.uk.
