Local Involvement Networks (LINks) were created to give individuals and community groups a stronger voice about their local health and social care services.

There is one in each local authority area. LINks involve local people in looking at health and social care services, and work with them to plan how they can be improved. In addition LINks have specific powers, for instance, to refer issues to Overview and Scrutiny Committees or to undertake site visits.

In the recent Government White Paper, Communities in Control, the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) and the Department for Health made a commitment to testing the LINks model in services other than health and social care.

The intention is to see how effectively the LINks can operate in another service area in addition to their existing health and social care work. The Project Board, after a call for expressions of interest to all LINks to test the expanded remit, selected four areas, which are:
  • Ealing
  • Milton Keynes
  • Northumberland
  • Stoke
CDF are supporting and evaluating the LINks in expanding their remit. This will entail providing tailored support to the LINks in developing plans and activities, whilst capturing the learning from the four areas about whether an expanded remit is viable. The projects are intended to run until 2011.
