Migration

The Community Development Foundation’s engaged communities team is working to explore community development approaches to building cohesion in areas affected by recent migration.

Since 2004 there has been a record influx of migrant workers from the new European Union accession countries. This new migration has been exceptional, both in its numbers and because much of it has been to areas which have previously experienced relatively little migration. This has resulted in a renewed concern about the cohesion effects of migration.

We are working to explore community development approaches to building cohesion in areas affected by recent migration.

We have recently published interim findings from our research into community development approaches to build cohesion in areas affected by migration from European accession countries: Migration and Cohesion: Community development responses.   This briefing shows the important role played by CD workers in responding to tensions in communities and also the practice challenges they face.

In the next stages of this work we will further explore these challenges and develop practice responses to them through a 12 month programme of action learning with practitioners working in this field. We are currently in the process of identifying practitioners to take part in this work which is due to commence at the end of 2009 and its findings will be published in December 2010.

If you would like further information about this work or might be interested in taking part please contact jessica.mullen@cdf.org.uk.
