The Neighbourhood Support Fund (NSF) was a £90 million programme launched by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) in 1999 with the aim of re-engaging disaffected and disengaged young people aged 13 to 19 with education, employment or training. Since the end of the programme in 2006, CDF has conducted two evaluations of the programme’s impact.
Findings of the 2009 follow-up survey reveal the lasting impact of programme funding on the communities involved. Today young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) enjoy a greater volume and variety of activities in their local communities. The success of NSF-funded projects has earned them great respect within their communities, in particular from local funders. Many projects have secured additional funding following the end of the programme, ensuring the continued engagement of young people in the future.
CDF has released preliminary findings from the survey in the briefing paper, Young people, the community organisation, and the community. A full report of the findings and lessons learned will be published in spring 2010.
