To create strong communities, we work to strengthen the community sector as well as the community development profession itself.
A strong community is one which people feel part of, where they feel they have influence over decisions that affect it and in which there is a thriving community sector. It is able to identify its own strengths and vulnerabilities and to take appropriate action on issues that affect it in the face of economic, social and environmental change.
Strong communities require strong and independent community organisations and networks which are effectively managed and run in ways that make a positive contribution to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the community.
We promote community development approaches [hyperlink to What is CD] as we believe that they have a key role to play in supporting community-led innovation and the building of fairer, safer, and healthier communities that are resilient in the face of change.
• We support voluntary and community sector organisations and statutory bodies which use community development approaches, to enable them to share information, expertise and develop new partnerships
• We support good practice in community engagement in planning, regeneration programmes and the development of new towns and settlements
• We support the development of a skilled and recognised community development workforce which is able to demonstrate its effectiveness
