Strong Communities

Strong Communities image

To create strong communities, we work to strengthen the community sector as well as the community development profession itself.

Why do we support strong communities?

A strong community is one which people feel part of, where they feel they have influence over decisions that affect it and in which there is a thriving community sector. It is able to identify its own strengths and vulnerabilities and to take appropriate action on issues that affect and ensure resilience it in the face of economic, social and environmental change.

Strong communities require strong and independent community organisations and networks which are effectively managed and run in ways that make a positive contribution to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the community.

We promote community development approaches as we believe that they have a key role to play in supporting community-led innovation and the building of fairer, safer, and healthier communities that are resilient in the face of change.

Current work

An independent expert panel on community development
CDF set up an independent expert panel to consider the context, future role, and the development and support needs of communities and community development in the light of new and emerging policy agendas.
We support voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations and statutory bodies which use community development approaches.
Our work in this area focuses on enabling the VCS and statutory bodies to share information and expertise, and to develop new partnerships. In particular, we support joint working on sustainable development and climate change.
We support the development of a skilled and recognised community development workforce which is able to demonstrate its effectiveness.
Our work in this area covers promotion of the CD occupation, research and lobbying to address the challenges that CD faces, and development of the qualification and credit framework.
We support good practice in community engagement in planning, regeneration programmes and the development of new towns and settlements.
We believe that there are a number of important synergies between CD and planning processes.
