Tackling Race Inequalities Fund (TRIF) was a £9.5 million grant programme which supported already successful voluntary and community sector and infrastructure organisations to expand their race equality work.

The Fund was opened in April 2009 and closed at the end of June 2011. It was sponsored by the Department for Communities and Local Government (Race Equality and Diversity Division). TRIF supported work:

  - promoting equality of opportunity for people from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) groups

  - addressing inequalities of access and reducing gaps in outcomes for people from BAME groups in a range of public services, including education, health, housing and the criminal justice system, as well as in employment

  - carrying out research into issues relating to race equality to increase the  evidence base around the challenges facing BAME communities, and approaches to tackle them

  - increasing levels of civic participation, volunteering or representation in civic or political institutions among people from BAME groups

  - working with local bodies promoting race equality to help them work more effectively, including supporting the victims of racially motivated crime

  - working with particularly disadvantaged people within BAME groups, including women, young people and people with disabilities.

Twenty-six organisations operating across England, or one of its regions were awarded grants of between £200,000 and £450,000 spread over two years.

The CDF Programme team were responsible for administration of the programme. As managing agents CDF provided support to grant recipients, enabling them to build capacity and work to ensure longer term sustainability of funded activities.

The CDF Research team conducted an evaluation of the programme, identifying key outcomes and learning.
